Our Story

Forty Years of Brotherhood, Ten Years of Purpose

AGSOBA Club 8186 is a distinguished affiliate of the Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys Association (AGSOBA) — the alumni body of the historic Abeokuta Grammar School, founded in 1921 by Rev. Canon Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, himself an old boy of the school.

Our Club takes its name from the years that define us: members who gained admission in 1981 and graduated in 1986 — “8186.” That number is more than a label. It is a bond that has carried us through careers, families, and continents, and brought us back together to give back to the school that shaped us.

Our Beginning. Many of us stayed in touch long after graduation, but the Club as we know it today began in earnest in 2016, when Agsoba Mrs. Modupe Babarinsa-Labode created a WhatsApp platform that reconnected classmates across Nigeria and the diaspora. That virtual reunion became permanent when members gathered for their first formal meeting in Abeokuta in April 2016, hosted by Agsoba Remi Karunwi (“Iroko”).

Governance. From the start, the Club built its house on service, accountability, and member welfare — anchored by the Project Committee, the Welfare Committee, and a Healthcare Sub-Committee. In 2017, the Club adopted its Constitution and Bye-Laws, with every committee reporting annually at the AGM.

Our Achievements

What We've Built Together

2016

Official Unveiling

Unveiled during the 108th Founder’s Day, coinciding with the 30th Anniversary of the Class of 1986. The Club announced its first major commitment: a modern gatehouse and perimeter fence. Agsoba Mrs. Modupe Babarinsa-Labode was honoured with the Distinguished AGSOBA Award.

2017 – 2018

The Gatehouse & Perimeter Fence Project

Supervised by the pioneer Project Committee under Agsoba Dr. Babatunde Bamigboye. Groundbreaking took place 6 May 2017; the first phase was completed and commissioned at the 2018 Founder’s Day — and has been maintained ever since.

2024

AGSOBA Champions Award

The transformational gatehouse project earned AGSOBA Club 8186 the prestigious AGSOBA Champions Award at the 2024 Founder’s Day Ceremony.

2025

AGSOBALIGANZA Champions

AGSOBA Club 8186 emerged overall winner of the inaugural AGSOBALIGANZA — a cultural showcase celebrating the heritage, traditions, and spirit of the AGSOBA community.

Looking Ahead

The 40th Anniversary Legacy Project

As part of the 118th Founder’s Day Celebration and the 40th Anniversary of the Class of 1986, AGSOBA Club 8186 has embarked on another landmark intervention for our alma mater.

1

Administrative Block Renovation

Full renovation and modernization of the School Administrative Block.

2

Environmental Enhancement

Comprehensive aesthetic upgrade of the surrounding school environment.

3

Traffic & Access Improvement

A new alternative exit route behind the Administrative Block to improve traffic circulation within the school premises.
